Why do we own stem cell? Why are they dormant?
It just confused me. They are found is almost all cells and enjoy the ability to morph into almost any other type of cell, theoretically capable of growing unknown body parts. But they need a hormone to set them off.
Why don't we have this hormone? Why don't we produce it, since we own stem cells? Why have we evolved to have them? Is the fitness to grow new body parts a thing our ancestors used to have, but is be lost due to natural selection? Is there a principle why we don't produce that hormone?
Don't get me wrong- I'm all for stem cells man used for medical purposes, but I'd like to know more about them and know whether or not they are safe.

The stem cell we have in our bodies are called developed stem cells. They are multipotent which means they have the gift to become a handful of different cells, but that is all. They are not dormat, they definatly function and reproduce and do what they are supposed to do. For instance, bone marrow are stem cell that can turn into the different types of blood cells as well as bone cells. These stem cell do not use any hormone to turn them into anything, are safe to use, function as multipotent stem cells naturally within our bodies and have been used in medical research and treatment for going on for 100 years.
Embryonic stem cells come from fertalized eggs, or blastocysts that are about 4 days old. They are pluripotent and can become lots of different types of cell. The first human trial with embryonic stem cells is starting this summer. Since they have singular been in research for about 10 years, we dont fully know how nontoxic it is, however, it is safe enough that they are beginning human trials.
What I deem you are talking about, is research taking adult stem cell and reprograming them to become become pluripotent, called induced pluripotent stem cells. This is the new alternative to embryonic stem cell to avoid the moral debate of killing embryos that are going to be killed whether the research happens or not.
Here is the wiki post something like induced pluripotent stem cells, and many people do not quality it is safe, but this has only be in research for about 2 years. However, they use viruses, not hormones to induce the transformation, which is why tons people feel its not safe.
