My sister have Cystic Fibrosis and have gotten pneumonia, can I detain pneumonia from her?
My little sister is 13 and has Cystic Fibrosis, she gets sick a lot and have been very ill lately. 2 days ago she be diagnosed with having bacterial pneumonia. I'm just wondering, if I'm around her and touch her and such, will I possibly take pneumonia myself? (she's in the hospital now, but of course we live surrounded by the same house) What should I do?

2nding the answer above....no. You're safe.
She most likely have an ongoing infection with a bacteria that's literally everywhere; she just can't find it out of her lungs because of the CF defect. You have been exposed to one and the same germ constantly, but you won't ever have a problem with it. For example....give a ordinary mouse 100,000 of these bacteria straight down its lungs and a week later you won't even be able to recount they were there. Take a mouse with a problem similar to CF and offer it 1000 of the same bacteria straight down its lungs, and it will get a serious infection.
Fortunately, they've gotten really angelic at treating CF. The biggest problem nowadays is patient compliance and provider instruction. Harp on her to keep her treatments up RELIGIOUSLY. I met a girl at the finishing CF conference in Orlando that was running marathons, just because she is hardcore give or take a few following her medical instruction to the letter. 30 years ago, a CF patient would be lucky to get into their teens. Now, we're getting in position to add a geriatric CF care module to the conference. Source(s): I'm a research scientist that works specifically with CF infections.
You probly won't grasp sick. CF patients are more susceptible to lung infections cuz of the severely thickened mucus they can't easily clear from their lungs. They also usu get partic. germs that just rarely cause lung infections in on form folks.
Hope she's better soon. Source(s): call me doc.
