Are antacids a joke/hoax?
Im reading in my book that they help indigestion by neutralizing sharp in the stomach. But now the stomach doesnt have the sour environment and it can't make pepsin. So now you have protein indigestion! So are they a prank? Also, I thought the esophagus is covered with a protective lining to protect it from acid. Im guessing its a difference contained by PH. I know the ph of stomach is less than 5 I believe. What is the ph in the rest of the GI tract compared to the stomach. Is it 7.34-7.45 elsewhere?
Thank you
Answers:
Pepsin is more active at lower PH, surrounded by fact the stomach can go lower than 5, I think it can progress as low as PH 1 or 2, the problem with people that take antiacids is not digestion, it's too much acids individual produced in the stomach or a problem in the lower sphincter of the esophagus that causes reflux of tart content into the esophagus, both conditions can cause symptoms such as pain and irritation, the esophagus is not as good as the stomach to protect itself from acids and profusely of acids in the stomach can result in a peptic ulcer, not to mention that reflux to the esophagus is surrounded by long term a risk factor for esophagus tumor.
Antiacids can inhibit the digestion in the stomach but it's a cost that is surpassed by the benefits of smaller quantity harming acids in the stomach.
