I have recently heard of someone who have had swelling of the brain has had their skull removed and stored within their stomach. Does anyone know why this happens and if the skull can be replaceed after?
Thanks

Ah, that's a super-risky last-ditch treatment for severe cerebral edema that would otherwise cause demise. What they do is actually cut part of the skull off to allow the brain to expand in need herneating (squeezing itself through the foramen magnum, the hole at the bottom of the skull through which the spinal cord exits) then it's placed in the abdomen to maintain it alive while they wait for the brain swelling to go down with the expectation of re-attaching it latter.
It has less than a 5% survival rate (when last I checked); mostly because things own to be so bad before it becomes an chance, but is generally done in situations when, without it, the arbitrary of survival would be zero.
A bone flap is removed to allow the brain to swell and accomodate the increased pressure without any adverse consequences. The flap is placed in the stomach to hold the bone clean and well moisturized so it can be replaced when the swelling has decrease. Source(s): I'm an RN
