If something is contagious, it way that it can be spread from person to person, or from animal to person. How contagious something is is determined by how the virus or microbes is spread, the location which the virus or bacteria can survive, and how long it can survive outside its "comfort zone." All bacteria and viruses are contagious, it a short time ago depends on the factors above.

Some things are extremely hard to spread to the point where we sticky label it as "noncontagious." But spreading a virus can be as simple as someone sneezing, not washing their hands, and then touching something else. Whereupon you touch like peas in a pod thing they touched and you then rub your eye or eat something unknowly that you've immediately transposed their virus into your body.

It's much more difficult to spread a virus like HIV though, where an infected person must mix their blood beside your blood.

Something that is very contagious usually means that it can spread through the atmosphere or drinking water and survive for long periods outside of a host (like a human or animal). Also, something that is extremely contagious can spread from species to species. This is the satchel with bird flu and why it has so many so worried, because it could become a tragedy if birds spread a virus to humans which we then had no defenses for. Many could die.

But please not that many virus and bacteria are not harmful to humans. And many germs are even helpful and necessary for our bodies.
