Need to enjoy scan previously seeing consultant BUT....?
Although i am a nurse I don;t know all the answer's and need advise on what my sister could do within this situation.
She has a history of cervical cancer. It's possible it may have returned. She has to hold an internal scan and a pelvic scan before she sees her consultant BUT basically she cannot acquire one before. She has tried speaking to her consultants secretary to explain situation but has get nowhere.
It would be sensible for her to have these scans before so that her consultant can discuss the results beside her.
Is there anyone else she could contact to try and organise this? The scan people say that the earliest they can scan her is 3 weeks after her consultant appointment. She doesn;t want to put an end to her consultants appointment as this is an urgent appointment and should not be put off.
Also she was due another smear 6 months ago BUT they have not done it but.
I am so worried about her. She is 33 and very fragile and frightened at the mo. Had her first baby 6 months ago.
Wish I could do something to aid but all I have been doing is listen and comforting as best I can. We live 100 miles apart.

That sounds like quite a bizarre situation, and very stressful for your sister.
From her history it sounds close to her urgent appointment is warranted, and the scans should therefore be done equally urgently.
If the consultant requested the scan afterwards he/she should have arranged it (and, if your sister is being seen surrounded by an NHS hospital, this is generally the only way of getting a scan anyway).
She wishes to pester, pester and pester some more. If she's not getting anywhere with the secretary, then try speaking to the PALS (Patient Advice & Liason Service) at the hospital. Has she spoken to her GP about this? If the GP can't return with the scan quickly himself, then he may have easier access to the consultant to win them to do it. Finally, remember that your sister has the right to choose to have treatment at another hospital if she would prefer.
It is not the consultant's secretary she should be talking to but the consultant himself/herself. If the consultant think it important, it will happen. Source(s): 38 years in pills
