Mental deterioration within elderly culture near hip fractures?

My mother broke her hip and is in the hospital. She was already developing dementia and we expected some further confusion, but tonight all of a sudden it be like someone flipped a switch. She is throwing her covers off, pulling off her monitor lead, talking out of her head.

Is this common within such a case? She is getting good care, but wishes a lot of pain medicine. Does such confusion clear up or should we expect her to stay this method?

Probably lately a bit of delirium from the meds/pain unusual environment. The scary thing is that 20% of people near a hip fracture die within one year. Source(s): http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/bo…
Yes, this is a much more adjectives occurrence than most people might know. The sudden deterioration in her mental state doesn't story in the hip fracture per se, or her quality of treatment, rather the reality that she is in a hospital and confined to bed all day finances that there is not much to stimulate her brain and keep the dementia at bay. Also, the dull pain medication might be playing a role in brain activity. But it's not uncommon for citizens to say that after admitting a loved one to a hospital or nursing home, that they have see their loved one's mental state deteriorate much more rapidly than before admittance.

Most physicians agree that steady stimulation for a patient's mind is the best passageway to fight mental illness and slow its progression. Drugs and medication can only shift so far. At this point, I would expect that your mother's mental state will get better to the point she was before the operation, especially when she get home. But for fighting the dementia for as long as you can, I must stress brain stimulation is key. Social interaction, painting, music, and dance can easily become your best weapons.

I hope that helps you! And best of luck!!
Sometimes it's the pain medication but most of all it's the other medications they prescribe next to them. I don't know why doctors give so many awful drugs to older those because it just expedites the deterioration of their conditions.

The worst thing they put them on is called trazadone...I would ask if your mother is getting that and hold her taken off of it immediately! I can't tell you how lots elderly people I've known to take that and a moment ago be blasted out of their wits...only to have them do so much better when they are taken off of it.
I'm sorry..I really hate to say this but...
when you enjoy such cases, dementia rapidly increases. Usually a sign that the body is giving up :(
Please ask for hospice, they'll explain

There are tons reasons for such dementia and confusion, and it is quite likely that things WILL clear up. Shock, misery medication etc can all contribute. Another thing that can happen and is worth asking something like is hyponatraemia - low blood sodium. It happened to my father and was really bizarre. Apparently it happens not infrequently contained by older people after shock and he - who had not previously shown any signs of confusion or dementia - be really talking utter nonsense. Fortunately, the 'cure' was to do exactly what my mother have been preventing him doing - eating lots of packets of salted crisps, putting saline on his food etc!! And it was remarkable how soon he recovered.

I also know of another older person, already showing signs of dementia, who have to go to hospital for an operation and became impossible for her (adult) children to deal beside. They were very much afraid that this would be permanent, but it didn't prove so - a few weeks next, she seemed back to her version of majority.

So I am really hopeful your mother will get through this seriously difficult phase of things.
(((C))) I con't know that answer, but I can say that in the presence of the dearth of medical practice, the average layman could tell you that major love, prayers, and Quakerly Light are coming your way.
