Atrial fibrillation: what are the best treatments available today?

I hear that Sanofi has a new drug to help treat this call Multaq. How does it work and what, if any, are the side effects? Also, at what point does a person go to an electrophysiologist (I think that's what they're called) to correct A-fib... is this AFTER standard treatments own failed? Does a person's degree of A-fib have to be severe to jump to a doctor like this? Any information is appreciated!

I don't think the drug is out yet, but I could be wrong.

Treating AF is complex. First, you look for any treatable cause.

If that's not successful, then you look at how long the patient has be in AF & if they are a candidate to be shocked back into rhythm.

There are several drugs that are used for AF. Some control the rate, some try to keep the heart in rhythm.

First off, a obedient cardiologist is needed. An EP doctor is usually only seen if the meds don't work or aren't tolerated.
