Why do they mix acetaminophen next to certian opoids?

I understand that acetaminophen is toxic to the liver in high doses, so I be just curious as to why they add something to toxic to opioids.

Are opoids by themselves just as toxic?

I am only asking because my mom just got out of the hospital for sugery and she was prescribed Vicodin and when I look it up, it seem that the Tylenol in it only has long occupancy damage.
Answers:
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that works in a different way than opioids. By mixing it near the opioid, you can achieve similar degrees of pain nouns with lower doses of the narcotic. Tylenol is toxic in high doses, but you aren't predictable to reach that dose unless you abuse the Vicodin more than directed. Keep in mind that overdosing on narcotic can be extremely hazardous as well.
They put the acetaminophen in nearby so people don't use the opioids to get high, if you overdose on vicodin it will be unpleasant because of the acetaminophen. That's something that I read on a medical article, because I be trying to find out why they have to put acetaminophen because I have a bad criticism to it due to liver illness. Junkies know how to get the acetaminophen out, I don't remember exactly but it's something about submerging the pills within water. Hope I was able to assistance.
Yes, acetaminophen can damage the liver when you use too much of it. In normal each day doses, it is not toxic. It is helpful for pain and fevers. It is combined next to opioids because it works different, so the combination may be more effective for controlling pain.

Something that was single toxic and had no medicinal purposes would not be approved for use nor prescribed by a physician. Source(s): PharmD candidate
