How are our medicine different from those of witchdocotors?
cause i don't really see any difference
Answers:
Our medicines have be tested for safety and efficacy using scientific methods (double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised, prospective trials). Basically we know they work and that they're safe. Boring but true.
Probably that the witchdoctors don't enjoy a lab to develop drugs in. They just had to rely on on doesn`t matter what plants were available. Of course there are many plants that we use that drugs come from and even use some from other tribes (curare & digitalis to autograph two). But if the witchdoctor's drugs didn't work HE had to worry about self killed or banished by the Chief... Source(s): NJ RN
Similarities: we use on our patients what we have seen work until that time in the same situation (either HCTZ for high blood pressure or some mashed-up leaves for a fever).
Differences: single ingredients vs concoctions, minimization of side effects vs explaining away side effects, lab information vs no lab data, clinical proof of efficacy vs not having that
We still use some remedies that may have be thought up by "witchdoctors" or other "healers". I know of many dentists that recommend clove oil, and cocaine is still used in some medical procedures (it be historically used by natives and may have been "prescribed" by healers).
