At the corner of our eye is a tube main to the nose, at the top of which is a small container called a lachrymal sac. This sac is full of tears. When we yawn the muscles in our facade squeeze this sac and tears spill out from the eyes. This also explains why your nose runs when you cry.
Yawning is still a bit of a scientific mystery, but we do know that is is caused by parasympathetic nervy stimulation. This same system of nerves controls many things, one of which is the production of tears.
When you are really tired, the parasympathetic nervous system is very moving, and it causes you to yawn and tear up.
More specifically, the trigeminal (also called the fifth cranial nerve) controls gash production (called lacrimation). This nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system. There is some investigational research that says yawning is caused when the brain overheats. When you are tired, your ability to control your body warmth gets worse.
