It isn't terribly uncommon. Morphine is major for causing the release of histamine from mast cells, so it doesn't necessarily denote you're allergic, but it may be a problem. Other narcotics are less likely to do this to you, or you may simply be able to order with antihistamines.
Hi,
Itching is normal when using opiates like morphine. Most heroin addicts experience impossible to tell apart thing. While it's annoying, it's probably safest not to take anything to try and alleviate the symptoms. Combining medications can be drastically unsafe and cause unconsciousness, overdose, or death.
While some family do take Benadryl for the itching, it's impossible to tell how much you should take in need it causing an unsafe reaction to the morphine. If you do end up taking some, I would nick less than the advised dose, maybe even in recent times half of a pill to see how it effects you.
But as soon as the morphine wears off, the itching will too. The itching is cause by receptors in your brain firing erratically, because opiates block those receptors. When you start sobering up, the itching will stop and your brain begins to return to normal functioning.
Good luck! Source(s): I'm an addiction counselor, sober off heroin for 7+ years.
Itching is a adjectives side effect of opioid narcotics like morphine. Benadryl can help the symptoms, but be careful combining these two sedating medication.
Itching can be a result from morphine. If you are not too drowsy from the morphine & the itching persists, you can take over the counter Benadryl, which is an antihistamine & should support decrease the itching. If the rash was that extensive you should nickname your MD to get him to change your medication to another pain med. Source(s): NJ RN
