If you send for 911 for a stroke, what will they do for you surrounded by the ambulance?
What will they do for you at the hospital?
Answers:
stabilize you in the ambulance, prescribe an anti-coagulant (blood thinner) at the hospital
They can usually try to get you stabilized with O2 & an IV vein in the ambulance & monitor your vital signs. In the hospital they will get a MRI or CAT to see if the stroke is from a clot or a bleed. If it's a clot, sometimes they will operate to remove it or start the anticoagulants. A small bleed, they usually monitor. With a ample bleed, its usually not much that can be done. Most patients wind up in ICU on monitors until they either reorganize or are transferred to rehab for follow up. It really depends on the extent of damage to the brain as to prognosis. Some patients do well & recover, some remain comatose for the rest of their duration. Source(s): NJ RN
