Atherosclerosis..confused almost the purpose of macrophages?

Hi there.
Have leart that in atherosclerosis LDL's can damage and store up within the arterial lining, thus causing an inflammatory response. What are the purpose of macrophages? why do they gobble up the LDL's, and if they do, what happen next? Why do they just sit there and turn into foam cell and do nothing? im sooooo confused, please help :)

This Wiki section on Atherosclerosis explains the roll of macrophages contained by this area:

I will not attempt to summarise it as this is a complex subject.

In the Wiki section where words are highlighted surrounded by blue you can click on them (eg macrophages) and it will take you to another section on macrophages.

Unfortunatly to really understand this complex subject you are in recent times going to have to wade through the scientific detail. The human body and its various system are hugely complex.

Good luck.
