Question just about which meniscus McMurray's question paper test?
With foot turned outward (heel pointing towards inside, toes point outwards), as I gradually extend the knee from full flexion, am I testing for medial or lateral meniscus?
The first big book I read (Apley) on this topic some years ago said lateral. Many subsequent sources I come across say medial.
Which one is it?
Personally I just decided to progress with which ever direction the heel points to, it's testing for that meniscus (ie. heel pointing medially, medial meniscus; heel pointing outward, lateral meniscus). Do you agree?
(A reference would be well brought-up thanks).
Answers:
My teacher said the way she remembers it is McMurray has 2 M's so its Medial Mensicus. My textbook (Mosby's guide to physical examination) say it is used to detect a torn medial or lateral meniscus. But it also says any paplpable or audible click, grinding, pain, or limited extension is a positive sign for a torn MEDIAL meniscus when you are rotating the foot and knees outward. (If your heel is out-that is pushing your knee in so that checks for medial meniscus.
You've finally arrived at it. Congrats!
