Can surgery damage your heart valve?
My 11 year old border collie recently went through surgery to hold a tumor removed from his elbow. While the suture healed rapidly, the bandage restraining his elbow movement cause the tip of his elbow to ulcerate. I was not given antibiotics for him immediately after the surgery, but once his elbow joint become exposed we were given antibiotics.
The now lingering trouble is the morning that his bandage was removed he began have fainting spells. This weekend he suddenly started having two or three fainting spells respectively day. The ER has diagnosed him as having low blood pressure and electrical problems beside his heart, and we are scheduled to see a cardiologist. But doctors and vets so routinely cover up each others mistakes, I'm getting round in the order of answers to my questions.
He has never had a single faint spell prior to this surgery. Could something that happened during the surgery have caused his heart valve to begin malfunctioning?

It could be just coincidental that it happened after the surgery since he really wasn't operate on in his body.Most dogs live 10- 15 years depending on the breed so he might just be starting to develop some medical complaints now. I hope not. Good luck. Source(s): NJ RN
Could own had a heart attack during surgery or in the coming weeks. Could be that his heart was already contained by the crapper and the stress of surgery and recovery (and resultant alterations in fluid balance) was ample to push him into a decompensated state.
