What does the size refer to contained by surgical scalpel sizes?
i.e. with a size 11 scalpel blade - what exactly does the 11 refer to?

There are about 5 common sizes. 10, 11, 12, 15, and 20. There are others larger consequently 20 but they are rarely used. A 10 is what you would typically think of when you think of a scalpel blade. It is curved and atmosphere sized. An 11 is straight and comes to a point at the tip. A 12 is like an 11 that it comes to a point at the tip however it curves inward so it looks a bit like a crooked finger.
