"growing" body parts on animals?
On a season 4 episode of Nip/Tuck, Rosie O'Donnell plays a woman who lost an ear in a vicious attack. They "grew " her a new ear on the back on a special mouse, I'm assuming using stem cell. IS THIS REALLY POSSIBLE? I know scientists are working on cultivating organs out of other cells, but do they really GROW them on animals?

Embryologically our arms and legs arise from areas on the embryo called limb buds, which are special regions of cells designed to grow surrounded by a particular way. Theoretically, if you took an animal embryo and transplanted the limb buds from the usual site to another, you could downfall up with an ectopic limb, out of its usual place.
But that's not what happened contained by this mouse obviously, because it's not a limb, but an ear,and anyway this was grown from a geared up made cartilage skeleton.

The mouse that this was base on actually existed and stuff. It has sort of been done.
They grew an ear on the final of a mouse, BUT; it was a cartilage frame, and the skin was grown over it.
They can't grow an actual human ear on the back of a mouse, but they can grow something that looks approaching one, and since all that is needed for the outer ear to work is a good shape to tube sound into the ear canal, I suppose it would function.
But it's more like putting wrapping rag round a present than anything else. The mouse didn't grow the ear; it grew skin over an artificial structure.
