Upper GI assessment question? Need answer asap please!?
I'm a 15 year old female and I am going to be having an upper gi try-out done where you have to swallow a barium drink and then they help yourself to x-rays. I have never had this done before so any personal experiences and if you could answer a few question that would be great!
Will the barium make me throw up (have severe chronic nausea and am severly afraid of throwing up)?
Will I be able to eat (or want to) after the assessment if so how long after?
Will it help my doctor diagnose me with Crohn's disease?
Answers:
If your physician is looking for Crohn's of the upper GI tract, then you'll likely own to drink the barium which really has no taste but a chalky milkshake texture to it. You'll also take some little crushed up bubbly "fizzies" to help distend things to make them easier to see under double contrast technique (that's how the physician interpreting the trial looks for small areas of abnormality that we see with Crohn's in the upper GI tract. The UGI only take about 15 minutes.
Sometimes (you can check your Rx), your physician may order a small bowel follow through (SBFT) and that might take an hour or so until the barium go through the whole small bowel and this will allow the radiologist to visualize the terminal ileum to look for evidence of cobblestoning, strictures, etc.
Most patients at your age can tolerate the exam well and it goes pretty rushed. My advice is to follow the directions carefully. When they tell you not to belch, it's really significant that you don't belch, otherwise they won't get good pictures and you'll need to rob more barium or more effervescent crystals (and no one wants that).
I ponder you'll be fine. It's a pretty easy test to do.

If you hold chronic nausea, they may give you an antiemetic to reduce your chances of throwing up the feast. And yes, it will aid in the diagnosis of Crohn's.
Good luck! Source(s): Med student
I had to do that, and its... really nice of gross. Its like thick milk. Its not too bad, I enjoy kind of the same reaction and I a short time ago took a deep breath and drank as much as I could at a time. It might make you vomit but just pretend its something you resembling or something. :) You wont really feel like eating afterwords, I didnt anyway. I feel really full and kind of gross, your stomach might be upset, mine was. And it would probably help determine if you enjoy Crohn's disease. Good luck! (Its not that bad, plus if it helps, you will be all the more glad you did it!) Source(s): personal experience, chronic sufferer of unknown stomach issues... :(
