Why should optometrists be call "doctor", and why do most ethnic group disagree that chiropractors are doctors?
Answers:
Both can be called Dr. just as dentists and pharmacists are. They are doctors within their given field (doctor of optometry, doctor of chiropractic), but are obviously Not physicians.
the problem beside you question is that the colloquial understanding of the word 'doctor' implies someone who go to medical school. doctor is actually a general title used to signify someone have completed a bachelor of medicine/surgery, PhD/doctorate etc.
optometrists can be called doctor, but they cannot help you with anything bar picking the right glasses or a snellen test. an opthamologist can however, fix your eyes pretty well. the explanation optometrists are doctors is that they studied for the title, passed their exams and were awarded with a great title they can tick on forms that makes them nouns intelligent. and good for them its real, just not surrounded by the colloquial sense.
chiropracters, on the other hand, practice what is called alternative medicine. ie. at hand is no scientific basis or evidence that suggests what they do is beneficial. to become a chiropracter i could go down a shadowy alleyway and pay some guy to give me a certificate, after go home, open a practice and actively 'snap' peoples bones in and strange (which never ever happens. you would die. but thats what they say they do). therefore they should not be allowed the title of doctor because they own done nothing to recieve it.
I agree with Kyle. I take issue with those that advertiser PAs and NPs go for doctorate degrees rather than masters. If you are going to stir that long, why not just make them medical schools and become physicians? I penny-pinching it is bad enough that a few of them act approaching they are physicians, but would you as a patient want some "doctor" come in and give you the indentation that they went to med school and completed a three year or longer residency when really they only go to a three year PA or NP program? If they want the title, they can go to med school like anyone else.
