Can I Cut A Pill In Half?
I can't swallow the DayQuil and NyQuil Pills because they are too large. Can I cut them in half and/or should I buy a different drug to get rid of this cold? If I should, then which pills work and is better?
Answers:

Get the liquid form of Day/NyQuil. It's usually right next to the pill form. You should not cut pills because it is messy and you may cut your finger. Also, you raise the risk of picking up germs when you are cutting it with whatever tools you are using.
Or you can shift to the pharmacy (unless you are too tired), and take a look at other medicine brands. Try to match both the mg and chemical surrounded by the ingredients to Day/NyQuil. I think Sudafed is smaller if this is still on sale.
Some pills can be cut, others can't. NEVER cut or open a CAPSULE or GEL.
Some pills contain a BUFFER on the outside. In the satchel of the medicine BUFFERIN, this "buffer" help the pill to pass through the stomach formerly disolving, thus eliminating the irration to the stomach that the medicine causes.
Other pills, expecially "time release" pills, contain a buffer to slow down the digestion of the pill so that it works longer.
SOME pills want the buffer so that the pills does NOT dissolve in your stomach, but goes into the intestines. This is because the medication is destroyed by your stomach acid.
IF you cut ANY these pills consequently you break the "buffer layer", and the medication loses its effectivness.
The easiest way to tell if a pill CAN be cut is to see if there is already a smudge across the pill. If there is a "cut line" impressed across the pill already, then it is safe to cut the pill. If the pill is completely smooth after you may not cut the pill. Caposules and gels may NEVER be cut or opened.
In YOUR case, Nyquil products are available contained by liquid form,. By that instead.
As for other medications, ask your doctor if there is a "reduced dosage" tablet available. In some cases you can pilfer TWO small pills instead of one LARGE pill.
