Every part of your body is made up of cells. Your brain, you skin, your heart, your kidneys, even your bones. All are made up of different kinds of cell, specialized to do one job.

Well, when a baby is developing inside the womb, it has a kind of cell that can develop into any description of cell. This is obvious if you think about it. An embryo starts out as a single cell, the mother's egg, and ends up beside all the organs of a human being--heart, lungs, eyeballs, muscles, etc. So there has to be the power for a cell to develop in several different directions.
A few years ago some scientist got the idea of doing research to see if these cell could be used to help people with enduring kinds of diseases. Alzheimers disease is a good example. It's caused by cell dying in the brain, which the brain can't replace. Paralysis is sometimes caused by injuries to the spinal cord which the body can't repair. There are dozens of other really horrible diseases that could be helped.
Now, contained by the US there are many clinics where they do IVF, in-vitro fertilization. Couples who are have trouble getting pregnant, they go to one of these clinics where they take a few eggs from the woman, a few sperm from the man, and they seize them together in a petri dish. They watch these fertilized eggs and as they develop they implant a few within the mom-to-be. Usually they make more fertilized eggs than they need. The rest go surrounded by the trash! Christians believe a fertilized egg is the same as a person, and they protest abortion, but I have never hear Christians criticize the destruction of leftover embryos in IVF, of which there are thousands every year.
So the perception was to use some of these leftover embryos to make stem cell, to use for research. This is unpopular with Christians, even though they don't mind them just going in the trash. To me this is more of a political item than having to do with religion.
President Bush banned federal funds for stem cell research. Not the research itself, basically the fed. govt. paying for it. Most of this kind of research is paid for near federal funds. This was an unpopular decision with even oodles Republicans, like Nancy Reagan, whose husband, ex-president Ronald Reagan, died with Alzheimers. Obama has restored funding.
