Can women draw from into orthopedic surgery residencies? Can DOs be orthopedic surgeons?
I am a sophmore in college. I am in an accelerated program so my status is really a junior. I am surrounded by the honors program and my GPA is 3.86. I want to be an orthopedic surgeon. I am thinking about being a DO. Can DOs get into orthopedic surgery residencies? I own been looking at residents lists from schools around the country and near are very few DOs and very few women. Is this just because women and DOs don't apply for these residencies or because they don't receive in? Thanks!

Ortho tends to be very much of a boys' club. (That's why the drug reps that push meds to ortho are other hot women in short skirts and high heels - no lie).
I know a few female ortho surgeons - I can chew over of 3 off the top of my head. Ortho tends to require a reasonable amount of strength, and might be physically difficult in some instances for some women, like when you're putting dislocated joints wager on into place.
DO's can certainly be orthopedic surgeons, although some of the top residency programs might be prejudiced toward MD's still.
I considered ortho while in med school because I am fascinated by hand (until I peeked over the drapes and discovered anesthesia...) You'll have to see if you feel comfortable with the ortho guys when you're surrounded by med school. If so, get very involved near that service so you can get good recommendations. Women can, but for whatever reason they freshly don't seem to have as much interest in ortho. Our class president surveyed our class on specialty choices and single one or two of the people picking ortho was a woman, and this is in one of the largest school in the country.
