What make feces brown, and not the color of the food you ate?

its gross but there must be some reason...
Answers:
One of the breakdown products of red blood cells is bilirubin and as a waste product of hemoglobin, the bilirubin gives feces its brown color. Source(s): Biochemistry. Champe & Harvey.
The brown color is produced by a metabolite of billirubin, which is a product of heme metabolism. Bacteria living in your GI tract degrade billirubin for energy synthetic precursor, and the leftovers product is brown.
Ya mum.
The digested food go through a chemical reaction which causes it to turn brown...Almost like when something rusts... Source(s): Pre-Med Student
- breakdown of haemoglobin produced bilirubin
- it is then conjugated near glucuronic acid in the liver, making it water soluble
- conjugated bilirubin secreted into the bile and passed out into the gut
- some is taken up again by the liver (via enterohepatic circulation) and the rest is converted to urobilinogen by gut germs
- urobilinogen is converted to stercobilin (which colours faeces brown)
