is it a general specialty
Answers:
Immunology is the study of normal and the malfunction of the immune system, pretty obvious. Yes, it is a specialty, but first you have to get your M.D or D.O point.
I think immunology is a medical specialty.
The immune system protect us from infection, and even cancer, and it just keeps us glowing overall. However it is a complex system, and it has the ability to destroy pretty much any cell surrounded by your body, except for cells physically separated from antibody circulation. You can imagine how things can go wrong beside the immune system. There are different types of allergies all mediated by the immune system. Multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, myesthenia gravis, graves disease, hoshimoto's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, insulin dependent diabetes meilitus, pernicious anemia, hemolytic anemia, good pasture's syndrome, addison's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, etc... are adjectives just some of the many autoimmune diseases. Also, the major purpose why organ transplantation are not successful is due to rejection of the donated organ by the immune system, this is a huge area of research to develop better methods for immunosupression other than current drugs and steroids. There are also immunodeficiencies which renders a person especially vulnerable to opportunistic infection, this is what HIV does once AIDS develops. As you can see there is a lot to yak about in immunology.
