Phlebotomists...what do you use to cleanse the skin since drawing blood to be tested for alcohol?
I was recently arrested for a potential DUI. The police officer escorted me to the hospital to get a blood question paper. I'm pretty sure the nurse used an alcohol pad to cleanse my skin prior to drawing blood. I've heard that the small amount from the pad can enter into your bloodstream and slightly affect the results of the BAC. Is this true? Also, do the police usually paw the nurse a DUI "test kit" with all the supplies needed (Vial and what not)for this procedure? I requirement this info for evidence in my court case...thanks for your assistance!

We use Betadine or Chloroprep. Even if the phlebotomist used alcohol it wouldn't cause a false elevation. The alcohol we use is isopropyl which is different from the ethel alcohol people consume.
No, it is not true that the alcohol from the pad can affect the results. That is a convolution created by lawyer that don't understand organic chemistry.
The Police do have a drug and alcohol tackle that is used for legal purposes. It contains a chain of custody to insure the test are valid for the courts. Either a nurse will draw the specimen or possibly someone from the lab. The specimens are then given to the officer.

The skin is cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol. The blood test is for Ethanol. These are two different types of alcohol.
