Can the wrong doseage of Thyrox for hypothyroidism head to hyperthyroidism?
My mum had recently realised she has be double dosing accidently on Thyrox, she feels fine and at a recent check up (no blood test) everything was okay but is there a uncertainty she could now have slight hyperthyroidism as she has lost profusely of weight.
Also, she is only on it temporarily and used to have a totally low heart rate which has increased, will it go back down when she comes past its sell-by date it?

Yes it can lead to hyperthyroidism, the loss of counterbalance and the increased heart rate are due to too much medication. She needs a blood test, then possibly a downgrading in her dosage...this needs to be determined by her GP. You say she is merely on it temporarily, which i dont understand, as usually people who are prescribed this are on it for life. your mum is also exempt from paying her prescriptions while taking this medication...i believe she will call for to get a form from her GP for this. she probably is slightly over active now.she needs to stir back and get her full bloods done . t3 t4 and the tsh . as the wrong dose will have messed things up a bit. she'll be rear legs to normal in no time once the correct dosage is restored.what dose was she on.? No it cant. Your mum doesnt produce satisfactory of the hormone and takes thyroxine for this, it will not make her hyperthroid as she cant produce the levels. Blood exam would show an elevated thyroxine level, which she should have taken. Source(s): nurse
Yes, she could have symptoms of hyperthyroidism because the medication is stimulating her thyroid close to natural hormones would. It normally takes for a while bit of time to notice the effects with thyroid medication though. Metabolism, heart rate etc should all turn back to normal after she is on the correct medication dose for a little bit.
