Book recommendation on one a psychiatrist/working surrounded by a mental hospital?
I'm a writer doing research to eventually write a protagonist who is a psychiatrist working in a mental hospital. I've got no background on this and want things to be logically accurate. Can those who know recommend some books (fiction or nonfiction both fine) that would give me a clear idea of what a mental hospital might be like/what a psychiatrist might do on an average day? The plot isn't centered around the hospital, but at hand will be plenty of scenes there so I want things not to be grossly incorrect.

I can tell you first hand what a mental hospital is like. First of adjectives, No, I am NOT crazy. The inside of a mental hospital is hard for someone to envision when they have never been inside and never will. I hold been in 2. They were both relatively similar. They both have rooms that looked similar to hotel rooms with one bathroom and 2 beds in respectively room. The main difference was that the only article in each room furniture-wise was a closet (to avoid have people hurt themselves). I was not allowed surrounded by my room during the day so i had to stay out in the hours of daylight area which was 2 large rooms that have couches scattered around and a tv and a few tables where we have our therapy sessions (which included music therapy, art therapy, rumba therapy, and support, reflective and goal setting groups). We had to set a day by day goal which was pretty stupid in my eyes (something flowing like write down 10 ways I can control my anger). We also had free time where we could do anything except things that could hurt us (we would draw, listen to music, study contained by my case). There were things about the psych unit that be different. For example: we couldn't have belts, shoe laces or shoes on, ipods or any electronics, meds except for those we had to pilfer, forks, pencils or pens, or gum). We also had to talk to different population (like nursing students, med students, doctors in residency, social workers and of course, counselors). We were treated approaching guinea pigs. When i went into every personal therapy session (which was once a day) near the doctor she would ask me things like "how are you feeling today?" and i would always speak about her the same thing, and she would look around the room at all the wholehearted little med students scribbling at 1000 mph in their notebooks. It be like they thought they could figure you out. Sometimes we would take little surveys for the hospital and seize coupons to grocery stores or whatever. The people in the mental hospital, as grotesque as it sounds, often become closer to each other than they can to anyone surrounded by the real world. It sounds bizzarre, but we can understand each other and we know what the other is going through. The doctors and nurses and etc are adjectives very nice and try to be so helpful, but truthfully it was the other patients who help me the most! Hope this has helped!
Captain Newman, MD is a funny, sometimes poignant and tragic story of a psychiatrist in the army during WWII. I also enjoyed the movie, with appropriate performances by Gregory Peck, Tony Curtis, Eddie Albert and Bobby Darrin.
Not to say it would be THE BEST book for your research, but I'm sure it would confer you some insights...I read a book recently called The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog, And Other Stories From a Child Psychiatrist's Notebook. It's non-fiction and very interesting.
