The singing section is, ironically, the section which seemed to bestow most of my friends the most difficulty. It's based on critical thinking. It asks you to draw conclusions and inferences based on a passage and this can be difficult. When I took it, it be still on pencil and paper in the 90s and the registration packet came next to a sample of questions. Those practice questions are outstandingly much a reflection of how tough the actual test is. I'm not the fastest reader so time was my greatest urge. I actually did quite well on that bit, but don't be fooled-- I know some very bright people who did very powerfully on the remainder of the test but did really poorly on verbal reasoning and it kept them out of med school. Please don't underestimate the pressure of this section since admissions committees treat it seriously (unlike the essay which no one seem to care about. Try the samples that come next to it and that'll give you a sense of how hard or easy it is. If you're not a quickly reader as was the case for me, time can be a major difficulty, so that's something to think about. Many people don't practice much for the speaking and it winds up hurting them. The best sort of practice for the verbal reasoning in my belief is to just read a lot in doesn`t matter what you do and take plenty of practice exams to help with speed.
Many folks find this section to be the hardest. I liked it. You're right, it does depend on reading skills, but more than that it deals near critical thinking skills. It is not reading comprehension where you read the passage and the answers are obviously in that. It requires to get inside the author's mind and know his or her purpose for writing the article. Unlike many tests, the MCAT does not write passage exclusively for their Verbal Reasoning section. The passages are mostly exerts from scientific or literary journal. The best practice is to do practice tests in a timed environment (which I suggest for all sections) and reading dry journals. Also, during the test or practice tests, this is one article that you will really have no clue how you have done on until you get your score, so don't let that frustrate you. I had some times where I thought I made a 5 and get a 12 and others when I thought I did well and did poorly.
