Why are our intestines so long?
Our food has to travel a hell of a long way. How long are our intestines? Why are they so long and are they the same relative length at birth v. matured adult?

Basically because we're omnivores, our intestines are long to give more surface nouns through which nutrients and water can be absorbed. Carnivores require quite a bit smaller amount in the way of intestine, and herbivores typically have other adaptation (such as multiple stomachs) to help them break down plant material and more effectively absorb the nutrients. We're somewhere isolating.

The more surface area you can expose the food to the better it can be broken down and occupied, so you get all the nutrients out of it before it comes out the other extension.
