Can oxycontin exact sleeping problems?

My boyfriend takes three 80 mg oxycontin a day for chronic back throbbing and experiences difficulty sleeping since beginning the medication. He wakes up all darkness and sometimes only gets 2-3 hours of sleep between 11 p.m. and 7:30 a.m when he is trying to get some rest. It is extremely frustrating for him and no issue how hard he tries to relax he just can't sleep. Is this a known or adjectives side effect of this medication, and is there something that can help it (any home remedy or something a doctor may recommend)? Thanks for your input!
Answers:
Yes it does, if he is taking it too close to bed time he will lie awake next to his mind reeling. He may be addicted and in need of clinical counseling within order to overcome his addiction. There are many different avenues he can try for chronic pain.
oxycontin is supposed to put you to sleep
I was on 325 mg and it put me out for hours no matter how strong I tried to stay up.
It coats receptors in your brain.
Then again if it doesn't work for him it could be a side effect of the medication.
If it is not working for him maybe he requirements to change medicines.
My dad take (2) 80mg oxycontin a day and he has a lot of sleepless night. He'll take naps here and there of late to catch up on his rest but not even the naps work. Most of the night he's any watching tv or doing crossword puzzles or just fighting with his sleep. He's tried walking during the daylight, doing exercise and even drinking sleepy time tea, and nothing. What I don't suggest is taking "sleeping pills" such as Ambien or anything over the counter, it does not mix well with the oxycontin! TRUST ME! In my view I believe it is a side effect being that its a pretty high mg and indicated for the management of moderate to severe misery when a continuous, around-the-clock analgesic is needed for an extended period of time.

refer it.still consult the dr. who prescribed it
It sure can cause sleeping problems. I took it after highest surgery, and didn't sleep for three days. At all. I didn't have pain, but I started to shift a little nuts from not sleeping.

I'd suggest that he see a chronic pain specialist. Long term opiate use have some bad potential side effects, including opiate-induced hyperalgesia, where things that aren't painful start awareness painful because of changes in cell with opiate receptors. They also tend to be less and less successful over time.

Sometimes addition of a very low dose of a certain antidepressant help pain medication work better and aids in sleep. (Has nothing to do near depression, just a beneficial side effect of the drug)
