Why can't you stop taking anti-depressants suddenly?

I've been taking sertaline for several months.. and I haven't taken it for a couple days. My doctor told me NOT to stop taking it, and I know you aren't supposed to stop suddenly, but why not? Besides the fact the depression might come back, what other side effects can you obtain??
Answers:
In my personal experience, I got woozy and a bit lightheaded. I don't think a sudden rush of depression is among the symptoms. Keep on giving the meds a try. Meds and therapy really help me out of my depression.

Good Luck : )
It's just the depression coming rear that's the problem.
Anti-depressants suppress the negative emotions from your limbic system, so to open up those floodgates again would be a shock to your system that would probably trademark you relapse.
The most common side effects are headache, nausea, irritability, dizziness and diaphoresis (excessive sweating). It is not fun. Sometimes your heart rate increases to dangerous levels, you can also develop confusion, jump into a coma among other things. Sometimes the withdrawl is minor and just makes you feel lousy, other times it can be a medical emergency. I would lower your dose slowly as per your doctor's recommendations.

The depression coming back is always a possibility but this is not the point to stop abruptly ... is the possible withdrawl.

Hope this helps,
