Why must a steroid such as prednisone be narrowed rotten slowly?

Answers:
No the previous answer isn't correct, you don't become addicted to them but because of the medication your body will produce less hormones (because they are being supplied by the prednisone) when you go past its sell-by date the medication your body still produces less of these hormones Source(s): What my doctor said when he proscibed them to me
Abrupt discontinuation of treatment within patients who have been on steroids for a prolonged period of time may motive severe symptoms due to the fact the normal production of steroids by the body has be turned off.

b/c your body becomes addicted to them and you would go through withdrawals similar to any other drug.
Steroids are chemical messengers, which attach to cells at specific spots. Increasing the amount of steroids (by taking them) will cut down on the spots they attach contained by the cell. Cutting off too quickly will cause an inequity of receptor spots and steroids. By cutting down slowly, the cells have a providence to go back to "normal."
as you said prednisone is a steroid. usually given when prescribed. they be paid you take 6 pills the first day or something to get it into your system ASAP. but once you are within day 3 the steroids should have kicked in and be helping you catch well. they taper it off slowly b.c its a steroid, which can lead to dependency so they slowly pocket you off to avoid dependency and to maintain the drug in your system to verbs fighting off whatever you enjoy.
the reason i know this is because I had a poison ivy like reckless that would not go away with creams so they gave me prednisone to help out my body fight it off.
Prolonged therapy with prednisone cause the adrenal glands to atrophy and stop producing cortisol. When prednisone is discontinued after a period of prolonged therapy, the dose of prednisone must be tapered (lowered gradually) to allow the adrenal glands time to restore your health.
Steroids only need to be tapered if they are taken for a prolonged length of time.
When patients take steroids the body's natural production of steroids is temporarily shut down. This is due to negative feedback- the body recognize that there are steroids in the system so the adrenals say we don't want to produce steroids because they are being given.
The steroids need to be tapered to allow the adrenal glands to regain their everyday function and produce the necessary steroid hormones. Source(s): PA in surgical critical care
