i have just had a colonoscopy. the doctor never told me the results , but have ordered a Barium Enema . without telling me why. Is this a normal procedure
Answers:
I cannot speak beside authority about ordering the barium enema after a colonoscopy. However, the doctor should tell you why.

One criticism I own about out-patient centers where colonoscopies are performed is that the nurse or doctor discussions to you shortly after you are awake, but the effects of Demerol and Versed still play tricks with your memory. Perhaps the doctor spoke to you and you forgot it. This is normal, but the medical staff should realize this. Call the doctor and ask.
It's quite adjectives that people have lots of loops of colon (called redundant loops) which make it impossible to visualize the entire colon- from rectum to cecum (caecum as spelled surrounded by UK). This is completely normal in and of itself and is probably the most common pretext that a barium enema would be ordered FOLLOWING the colonoscopy. This is nothing to be worried about; it's just something that's done for the sake of completeness, i.e. so that the gastroenterologist can speak that s/he saw the entirety of the colon and it looks fine.

Beyond that, I can't think of a reason to order a barium enema following a successful colonoscopy. Source(s): Sleisenger & Fordtran
when a doctor sees something strange in a simple test resembling a colonoscopy, he will order a different test to narrow down what he's seeing. for example a cloudy daytime doesn't automatically equal rain.
The barium enema might be necessary but the doctor is missing an esteemed point:
The doctor works for you. He/she is obligated to tell you everything they know about your health. Whether a trial is done or not is your choice. If the doctor doesn't have a good explanation why they want to do it, don't. You are the boss. If he/she doesn't provide healthcare the way they should, fire them and obtain another doctor.

Get a thorough explaination and then decide on the barium enema.
I wouldn't utter it's normal procedure, but it's not uncommon. Usually the reason is because they be not able to see the entire colon, and barium can get to the places the scope couldn't. Source(s): I execute barium enemas in my job
You need to ask your doctor if that's his mundane procedure. If it's not, ask your doctor why he's ordering a Barium Enema. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions. It's your body your talking in the region of and you deserve answers. Good Luck!
barium enema is a screening test used to diagnose peculiar pathology examination of the large intestine (colon and rectum). . i.e ulcers, tumors, cancer, foeign bodies. Through this test doctor could know exactly where tha pathology lies ( location of the lesion ).... this procedure commomly used to diagnose colon polyps or colon cancer. and also Identify inflammation of the intestinal wall that occurs contained by inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. A barium enema also may be used to monitor the progress of these diseases. Detect problems with the structure of the large intestine, such as narrowed areas (strictures) or pockets or sacs (diverticula) contained by the intestinal wall.
Help correct a condition called ileocolic intussusception, in which the end of a child's small intestine protrudes into the voluminous intestine.
