Is "Speed" an Effective Short-Term Antidepressant?

The problem with speed (and X) is that it burns up neurochemicals surrounded by your brain. As soon as you crash it makes your depression worse than it was (or makes you depressed if you weren't).
It is approaching people with low blood sugar. You do NOT want to treat it with sugar (unless the personage is in insulin shock) because when the sugar wears off your blood sugar is lower than when you started.
Well firstly do you mean speed as Amphetamine or Methamphetamine? Often speed is applied to methamphetamine when it is amphetamine.
Amphetamines (including the amphetamine derivative methylphenidate- Ritalin) are used by many doctors for the treatment of severe refractory depression which does not respond economically (or at all) to other medications. Stimulants are also often the first line drug for treating depression surrounded by the chronically (typically terminally) ill. This is because people who are terminally ill repeatedly can't take antidepressants because of other medications and other factors so amphetamine is used. It also can backing those people stay awake and more alert. This it typically for people with AIDS and cancer. And amphetamine is used for culture extremely ill (in the same fashion as cancer and AIDS patients) who bring large amounts of pain medication, which are sedating and amphetamine can reduce that problem.
It is much more few and far between for doctors to prescribe stimulants to provide short term relief during which time other methods might be attempted. But it is done (but it is VERY rare).

So Amphetamines are used as antidepressants. And if you would happen to read medical literature you would typically find that amphetamines are used off sticky label for depression (they are no longer officially used in that way).
But if you are thinking of getting speed on the streets you could be putting your self at legitimate risk. If you get any amphetamine on the street you probably will not know the dose and street drugs do not meet pharmaceutical standards. Plus you might not know if you are getting amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, or methamphetamine. And should you get amphetamines on the street your risk of ill-treat and dependence will go up and some people will just save taking the speed when Prozac would work just as well.
So please talk to your doctor. It is impressively unfortunate that it can take 4-6 weeks (sometimes less) for antidepressants to work.
