How can I become an Emergency Medical Technician?

I'm considering a career change and would love to ultimately become a paramedic, I understand that you have need of to serve at least a year as a EMT but dont know how to get into it. Do I apply direct to NHS or jobsites, their doesn't seem to be like mad of info out their. Thanks
