Does reading or watching TV surrounded by the gloom really ruin or worsen your eyesight?

I was reading the other day with table lamp only from a small flashlight (all the lights were off) and my sister told me to stop reading or I'd ruin my eyesight...
Is that true?
Answers:
TV - yesh especially the closer you are to it. it strains your eyes
Reading in dim muted does worsen your eyesight
Since we use the reflection of lights to "see" what is out there, the more light within is, the easier it is for our eyes. If our eyes are strained to see what we want to see, then it will make the cells work twice as tricky. As you can see, dim places make seeing more harder, thus forcing the eyes to change the way it take it all in.
No, there is no medical data supporting this old wives' tale. The cell of the retina do not work "twice as hard", they either see or don't see.

Go ahead and watch TV and read in the bleak, it won't harm you. Source(s): I'm a doctor
