I want to be an MD/Pd.D, is a medical scientist a specific career, or do they get their Ph.D's in different things approaching biochem or genetics?

it depends ..sometimes you get your PHD in a different science pasture ...its part of the medical schol curriculum so the good thing is you dont enjoy to go to a separate school...you do 4 years in the medical arts school for MD and 4 years for PHD
Medical scientist, like a medical technologist? Someone that does lab analysis? That's what I do. The technical title is medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist.
Now if you want to go to medical academy and study more in depth pathology, then you want to be a pathologist.
If you want to be a med tech, like what I do, it IS a special program. You take a bachelor's of science degree in clinical laboratory science with a crucial in clinical laboratory science. The program will usually be listed in most college catalogs as any medical technology or clinical laboratory science (CLS).
I don't have a Ph.D. though, just a bachelor's. After you get your bachelor's scope, most hospitals want you to be certified either through ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or NCA (National Accrediting Agency) before you can work as an MT in a hospital.
