About checking to see if a personage is still alive....?

why do people check the neck/hand area for a pulse to see if someone is still alive, when its much easier to check if the heart is still beating. Isn't it unsophisticatedly the same thing? I mean if you don't hold a pulsating neck/hand then you shoudn't have a beating heart right?
