What is the difference between the drift and the shift of a virus?
please be specific, and not to be rude but if you dont know dont answer! thnx in advance
Answers:
Drift is normal chance mutations that occur because of errors in copying DNA or mutation due to damage etc. Drift is what cause the little variations so the normal flu virus can reinfect you year after year. Shift is a large degree change caused by the reassortment of genes. This includes combining different species viruses (swine flu have this--some components from pig's virus and some with human; Spanish flu was a combination of pig-bird-human). Shifts tend to be quite a bit different than the inspired virus and there is very little immunity. Shift can exact pandemics while drifts just cause local outbreaks or epidemics.
