The one element missing from your story was whether this be a cold water drowning or not. Probably not because you just read this story so it is probably summer time so the water be likely warm especially given that this kid is intensive care. The colder the marine is below about 40 degrees F the less brain vandalize a child may have. Source(s): Paramedic training
Depriving your brain of oxygen for 6 minutes or more can result in brain disfavour, the amount of brain damage that is experienced can vary greatly depending on various factors.

How much oxygen was in their lungs earlier they went under, how efficient the body be in transferring that oxygen to the blood stream, the temperature of the body, and some factors we might not even know.

There are free divers that can hold their breath for over 8 minutes next to no negative effects.
oh that sucks!! thats some one brother,son, nephew... but umm hes probably dead he is lucky enough to just be within intensive care to say his last goodbye..... :{
After four minutes of no oxygen flowing through the body minutes brain damage is inevitable... I'm not really sure how much would be done but it would be quite a bit of brain harmed. The child will most likely not be able to do everyday activities such as walking and or conversation anymore... Poor kid.
If effective CPR is undertake immediately after the victim is pulled out, there is certainly quite a reasonable chance of righteous recovery. The victim might just be a bit slower, a few IQ points down. I enjoy known one young victim of a similar hypoxic luck go on to further education.
