Iron too soaring to donate platelets?

I tried to donate platelets yesterday and my iron was 18.7. The apherisis machine can only filch 18. They said I could donate a pint of whole blood and then come back and my iron count would be lower.

But do I hold a medical condition if my iron is that high? Should I see a doctor about it?
Is there anything else I can do to lower my iron?

Thanks!!
Answers:
A common serum iron is in the range 60-170 mcg/dL, so I'm not sure what your 18.7 relates to. There are diseases involving abnormal Iron deposits, but I be you I would talk to your doctor and possibly have the test repeated. There may be a mistake somewhere.
I mull over it's in your diet, because it's not overwhelingly high. Do you take a multivitamin too? And get through lots of meat and green leafy veggies? If you do take a multivitamin I would try to find one without iron. Go back at the subsequent available date that you can donate and get it checked again. The levels in your blood aren't accurate right very soon to be tested by a doctor since you donated.
