They work very badly. Most digestion problems are caused from a withdrawal and not an over supply of hydrochloric acid. What indigestion tablets do is absorb this acid.
well i suppose they contain an alkali substance which nutralises the acid in your stomach causing the indigestion and so indigestion stops. Source(s): i think i got told that in science the other morning
Many of them, like tums and such, are antacids and act as a chemical buffer. They essentially soak up the acid approaching a sponge does water to increase the alkalinity. Some, like prilosec, are proton pump inhibitors which block the epithelial cells within the stomach from secreting protons, thus decreasing the acidity of the stomach.
