If the chemical composition (and hence osmotic pressure) in a capillary bed were constant, would this reversal still occur? At the arteriole running out of the capillary, blood pressure is higher than osmotic pressure, so water and small molecules leave the capillary through the fenestrations (tiny holes contained by capillaries). At the venule end, blood pressure is lower. The colloidal osmotic pressure--the pressure of water diffusing out of the intersitial fluid into the capillary, due to the large protein molecules that cannot resign from the capillaries--is constant throughout the capillary. At the arteriole end, osmotic pressure is lower than blood pressure, but at the venule end, it is greater, so water returns to the bloodstream.
