Can you become immune to pills?
I am on seroquel 200 mg and I've been having some symptoms I had until that time I started the pills to balance me out. I am bipolar, couldn't sleep due to trauma, and had really bad hysterics attacks about everything for no reason. I've been have mild panic attacks again recently and I hate it it is no fun and disrupts my existence. Should I talk to my psychiatrist and have her up the dose? Am I immune to them now since I've be taking them so long? Is that even possible? What do I do?
Answers:
Yes, this happens to a lot of people. Especially next to antidepressants and pills like that. Your doctor will probably prescribe you a different type of medication, like geodon.
Please enlighten your doctor that they are not working, they can either adjust the dose or try another medication. Some meds work good right rotten the bat but then taper off, you just haven't found the right one for you all the same.
In short yes and no. Yes people can build up an immunity to certain drugs such as antibiotics. No you do not build up imperviousness to psych drugs. What is happening to you is that you are most likely building up a tolerance to the drugs that you are taking. Since these drugs change your brain chemistry and alteration signal pathways, it is very common for the brain to revise or begin to become accomstumed to the new chemistry, and in these cases the doses can be titrated upward by the prescribing physcian. In some cases, you will enjoy a patient who gets to the threshold of the maximum doses. In these cases it is best to switch to another drug in one and the same drug class. This way you can start at the minimum, or lower dosing rates. Sometimes it takes a long time to find the correct drug combo and drug dosing to treat people within your shoes, and unfortunately it is very much trial and error.
I strongly reccommend that you speak with your physcian as soon as possible. Call, be paid an appointment, and in the meantime keep track of your symptoms in the form of a log. Write down the times that you are taking the meds, when you own a panick attack or sleep disruption or whatever the case may be and the time that it occurs, and also write down any question that come into your head before the next appointment. This means of access you will be able to use the time with your doc as effectivley as possible and know that you are getting the very best assessment. I told my Mom to do this. Before she be suffering from much of the same as you are, and went for about a year or two near no real progress. She kept a log for a few weeks and presented it to the doc the next time and he was competent to see some correlations and patterns that he would not have known just about without the info she gave him. It allowed him to make a better declaration on her meds, and has very much improved her condtion.
Good Luck to you.
