What is the difference between generic and non-generic drugs?

my psychiatrist perscribes me Venlafaxine, which is the generic name.
even though on the pill box it says Effexor, which is the brand name!
Answers:
the brand name cost more bcuz your paying for that entitle

the generic generated which has the same ingredients of the brand pet name cost a little less money

an example is Pespi soda (brand) vs. Shasta soda (generic)
The difference is that a non-generic drug is still under patent protection. That is, the maker have an exclusive license to produce and market the drug. A generic drug is one which has been around long plenty for the patent protection to expire, and, therefore, any drug company can manufacture and put up for sale the drug. However, it is quite common that the company which held the patent also produces the generic publication after the patent expires.
generic is alike as the original med. Exactly the same.

The only difference is the cross and the price. Generics are much cheaper.
I'll guess the brand-name is Effexor. Generic meds are the same as brand names. Once a brand name loses it's government grant, other companies make the pill with the exact same formula, so its fine.
According to the US Patent office, you can not trademark (patent) a chemical composition- product made up of just chemicals. You can however trademark a first name associated with that chemical composition. For instance, a perfume company mixes alcohol, lemongrass fragrance and rose petals and calls it Peal by Channel and then a different perfume company mixes matching ingredients and calls it Spingtime by Rite Aid. Same thing applies to drugs. Pzier makes a drug using a set ingredient chronicle and calls it Ambien while another pharmaceutical company uses the same ingredients and calls it Sleep-Aid. This is know as knockoffs vs brand name in the perfume industry and generics vs brand names in the pharmaceutical industry. There may be slight differences surrounded by composition but rarely enough to affect the results. Hoep this helps. Source(s): US Patent bureau website
