When did using "amnesiac" drugs on patients prior to surgery start?
Drugs like Versed/Midazolam and Propofol.
Answers:
Usually a tad before wheeling you within to the OR.
C'mon! Most people don't want memory of the surgical procedure, and you know that :) You're a special breed.
Amnestics have been contained by use longer than I've been alive - scopolomine was an early one.
Propofol is not an amnestic, btw, although if you administer enough of it, patients are unlikely to remember their surgery. Ditto with potent inhalation anesthetics.
Talk to the makers of the movie "Awake" - they've worried the hell out of a lot of people, and we have to be extra scrupulous to keep people amnestic.
Midazolam rocks, and I'm sticking with it. I wouldn't administer it to you, though :)
