Why is it celebrated to administer the preanesthetic medication at the proper time prior to surgery?
Answers:
There is a trend away from pre-medication for adults, and we usually only give it if a patient is really twitchy and upset. Those drugs are given IV and work in about a minute.
For kids, it's a totally different matter. Oral pre-medication take 10-15 minutes to have a decent effect. If you give it too close to going rear legs for surgery, it won't be working yet, and you've exposed a kid to the risks of a drug for little to no benefit.
If you give it too early, it can start to wear bad. Then, instead of a dopey kid ready for the OR, you have a fussy kid in a really unpromising mood. Been there. :( Source(s): I'm an anesthesiologist.
So that the anesthetic will work at the time you are ready to perform surgery. Drugs hold onset of action, which is the time it takes for the drug to exert its cathartic effects. Not all drugs work instantly once you administer them.
