There are several reasons that we ask patients to remove jewelry for surgery.

1. If cautery is being used, you can gain burned at the jewelry site.
2. If you have general anesthesia, you can get pressure sores and skin necrosis at the jewelry site.
3. (not applicable to you within this question) You can swell, and rings might cut off circulation to your fingers.

I give my patients a choice: jewelry or anesthesia.
Anytime you walk under the knife, you should remove any jewelry and or/ accessories. This is basically in case (God forbid) anything go wrong and obligation an MRI or an x-ray. Best of luck Source(s): Im not a doctor but Ill have a look
what you should do is when you go to see your doctor, ask him if he have a game called Battletoads. He will then brand name a funny "WHOOSH" sound, and spin in three circles and walk away. After this, sneak into his bureau, and do the surgery yourself. worked for me.
Unless the surgery involves your head consequently you most likely will not be asked to remove them. However, if you fear the skin may be overgrown you should talk to your doctor. There is a swab that they can recommend to loosen the tissue around the studs with no pain! :) Source(s): http://www.associatedcontent.com/user/11528/just_another_writer.html
