Why is a dialysis catheter placed by the hip?
A girl I know just got a catheter inserted for dialysis, and I thought they were going to place it on her arm...but instead they placed it by her hip. Why would they do it by her hip instead of her arm?

I'm assuming that you're referring to a catheter one placed into the femoral vein (groin). The reason this is done, for intermediate duration dialysis, is because the dialysis catheter is relatively large compute catheter and the femoral vein lies just anterior to the femoral head thus allowing for compression and fast hemostasis. It's simply the easiest place in the body to insert such a catheter for immediate use. In the case of a graft of fistula that's used contained by the forearm or arm, these take time to mature before they can be used, as unwilling the femoral catheter.
Be glad yours will be by the hip, I know people who have had them contained by their neck.
